In his early twentieth century study The Ruin, George Simmel ascribed the peculiar aesthetic appeal of ruins to the way they marry nature and culture, as sites where artifice moves back towards, or is overtaken by, organicism. Here is some of Shibakouen Hamutaro’s 2008-09 documentation of dilapidating theme parks around Japan, recalling the bubble economy’s abrupt burst.
