Taking the name from the music/poetry reading nights he was running at the time, Masahiro Tobita formed the label Spoken Words Project twelve years ago. The 2010 AW collection Psycho – Rough Ground was unveiled last week at Vacant in Harajuku where we ate mini frankfurts and Japanese pickles amongst ladders before the designer and his team dressed some models in ever-evolving layers pulled out of cardboard boxes scattered around the room. Tobita, who had studied textile dying and weaving at Tama Art University in Tokyo before training himself in clothesmaking, is known for his excellent graphics, colours and cuts, as well as his art practice in painting and sculpture. The collection is now also on show in the gallery room of the wonderful Utrecht art bookshop.
